Program Overview

Veterans Administration Special Housing Adaptations is a program through which disabled veterans may receive a grant to acquire housing or modify existing housing with special fixtures and facilities necessary for the veteran on account of his or her service-related disability. No restrictions on location.

Who is eligible for this program?

An applicant must be a veteran who suffered one of the following permanent and total service-connected disabilities: blindness in both eyes; or the loss of use of both hands. The veteran must express a reasonable intention to remain in the residence for which the request for adaptations is made. Grants are to be used to construct, acquire or alter a residence for a disabled veteran that will accommodate his or her qualifying service-related disability.

Property Eligibility Requirements

Allowable property types: The property must be adapted to the veteran's medical needs, or be capable of being adapted.

Benefit Details

Veterans with qualifying service-related disabilities are eligible for grants of up to $12,756 to modify their current homes or to acquire a different home with fixtures that make the house more accessible for the veteran. Assistance may not exceed $12,000. The amount of the grant will be the cost of adaptations to the veteran’s existing residence, or the fair market value of the adaptations in a residence with adaptations already in place.
